Yak breeding stock for sale

Welcome to the web site of the Yak Daddy Ranch.  Located in Buffalo, Wyoming at the beautiful Big Horn Mountains, we raise and sell yaks for meat or live sales for starting your own herd.

Yaks were first domesticated in Tibet about 1,000 BC. They are used for their milk, fiber, meat and as a mount or beast of burden. Yaks were introduced into Europe in the 1800's and into Northern America in the early 1900's.

People ask us why did we get into Yaks? After losing our Ag exemption on our property in Wyoming, I knew we had to start raising something. Friends of ours mentioned Yaks, and after some research we decided they made perfect sense for our Mountain Ranch. Listed below are several reasons we chose Yaks:

  • Yaks are quiet
  • Yaks require no special fencing
  • Yaks are disease resistant and cold hardy, they eat snow for water in the winter (Real important for our Wyoming winters)
  • Females calve with ease
  • Yaks are very docile and easily handled
  • They are fun and unique

So what are Yak’s like and would you want to own them?

Yaks are a unique breed with an exotic appearance. They have dramatic horns and a hump similar to Buffalo. Yaks are intelligent, quiet animals that live about 25 years. They learn fast and are playful. Bulls weigh from 1,200 to 1,500 pounds, and cows weigh from 600 to 800 pounds. Yaks eat about a 1/3 of what a cow consumes and are easy on the land. Yaks come in several colors: Black, Trim (Black with White trim),  Royal (Black and White) Golden and Woolly. Yaks need no special fencing or special feed, and they can mange well off of good pasture, water, salt and minerals. Yaks don’t need shelter in the winter. Yaks are easy to move from pasture to pasture (a little grain goes a long way) using a stick to guide them.
